You already run discovery workshops, write the steering committee deck and hold a room with a CFO who wants the answer on one slide. The question an hiring manager asks about you is narrower: do you ship code that a customer still runs after you leave? Yes, consultants make this move, and our guide to the forward deployed engineer resume shows how to put it on paper.
The short version: FDE employers name your client skills, and one FDE lead says business sense can be learned. The part they test hard is production code. Close that gap before you apply, and describe your consulting years as engineering evidence, not as advice you gave.
What FDE employers say about consultants
Start with the good news. Colin Jarvis, who leads forward deployed engineering at OpenAI Source 1The Future of Forward Deployed Engineering | OpenAI, Ramp, Nominal, DatalandPublisherSouth Park Commons (YouTube)Source typerecorded talk or interview, said on a South Park Commons panel in May 2026 that the team has a fairly diverse set of backgrounds, including BCG and McKinsey consultants and many former founders, and that what they have in common is being very outcome focused. Source 1The Future of Forward Deployed Engineering | OpenAI, Ramp, Nominal, DatalandPublisherSouth Park Commons (YouTube)Source typerecorded talk or interview That is one leader and one team, but the door is open.
Salesforce describes the role in words a consultant will recognize. Irina Gutman, its VP of Forward Deployed Engineering, said on the CodeNinja podcast in July 2026 that an FDE combines the same engineering skill set and deep product expertise with consultative skills. Source 2The Forward Deployed Reality with Irina Gutman (VP at Salesforce) | Podcast (YouTube auto-generated English captions)PublisherCodeNinja Inc., YouTubeSource typerecorded talk or interview Okta’s Senior FDE posting calls the role a “builder-consultant” who codes, debugs and ships identity solutions inside the customer’s environment. Source 3Senior Forward Deployed Engineer - Okta for AI AgentsPublisherOkta (Greenhouse)Source typecompany job posting
Other employers draw the line more sharply. Palantir’s blog, in an April 2019 post, calls it a common misconception that a Delta, its name for the forward deployed engineer, is a consultant; a Delta quoted there says consultants generally create a one-time analysis, recommendation or solution, while Deltas build a long-term solution with the customer. Source 4Dev versus Delta: Demystifying engineering roles at PalantirPublisherPalantir BlogSource typecompany blog Accenture’s European FDE posting says the role “is not a consulting role” and “not a project delivery role”. Salesforce, Okta, Palantir and Accenture all treat consulting skills as an addition to engineering, not a replacement for it. The exceptions are the strategist roles covered at the end of this post.
What transfers from consulting
Some FDE postings name consulting as a qualifying background. Notion’s Forward Deployed Architect postings accept tech services or consulting, alongside solutions architecture and implementation. Source 7Forward Deployed Architect @ NotionPublisherNotion (Ashby job board)Source typecompany job posting MongoDB’s Dublin and Cork Forward Deployed AI Engineer postings ask for experience as a field engineer, professional services consultant or full stack developer working with enterprise clients. Source 8Senior Software Engineer, Forward Deployed AI EngineerPublisherMongoDB CareersSource typecompany job posting
Anthropic draws a finer line. Its US and London FDE postings ask for years in a technical, customer-facing role such as FDE, or as a software engineer with consulting experience. Source 9Forward Deployed Engineer (New York City, NY; San Francisco, CA; Seattle, WA)PublisherAnthropic (Greenhouse job board)Source typecompany job posting That describes an engineer who has consulted, not a consultant.
Here is what you bring, and the FDE moment where it counts:
- Problem structuring. You can break a vague goal into questions. It counts when an interviewer hands you an open-ended prompt and waits to see how you scope it.
- Stakeholder mapping. It counts in the first five minutes of a decomposition prompt, when you ask “who uses this, who pays for it, and who owns the data?” before touching a design. Our free decomposition method lesson turns that habit into a repeatable opening.
- Executive communication. It counts in a client simulation, when the customer pushes back on scope and you have to say “no, and here is what we can ship by the end of the month” without losing the room. That is the moment our free client round lesson prepares.
- Working inside someone else’s organization. It counts in the follow-up “the customer’s security team blocks your deploy. What do you do?” Change boards, VPNs and approvals do not surprise you, so you can answer with a real sequence of steps.
- Writing. It counts in a take-home, where the write-up or README is part of what gets read: what you built, what you skipped and why, and how to run it.
Keep this in proportion. Jia Wu, a deployed engineering lead at Cognition, said at the AI Engineer World’s Fair, in a talk posted in July 2026, that business sense can be learned, while being the technical expert in the room is very hard to teach. Source 10How Forward Deployed Engineering is done at Cognition (Jia Wu; AI Engineer World's Fair 2026)PublisherAI EngineerSource typerecorded talk or interview Your strengths are the part they think they can train. The part they cannot train is the part you have to prove.
What doesn’t: the production-code gap
The Palantir line above is the whole gap in one sentence. A consulting engagement can end in a deliverable someone else carries forward. An FDE engagement ends in a system that runs, that you built and that you answer for.
| Consulting deliverable | FDE deliverable |
|---|---|
| Recommendation deck | Working system in their environment |
| Target-state architecture | The code that gets there |
| Spreadsheet model | Tested, scheduled pipeline |
| Handoff to client IT | You fix it when it breaks |
Expect a coding bar. Leo Mehr, Director of Engineering at Ramp, said on a podcast published in June 2026 that FDE candidates at Ramp face the same technical bar and must pass the software engineering interview loop. Source 11What is a Forward Deployed Engineer? (FDE Explained) feat. Leo Mehr of Ramp (YouTube auto-generated English captions)PublisherdearCC (Clara Shih), YouTubeSource typerecorded talk or interview
There has been a softer door at one company, in the past. In a May 2025 episode of Lenny’s Podcast, YouTube edition, Nabeel Qureshi, who spent nearly eight years at Palantir as an FDE, said that Palantir had two types of FDE: one passed a software engineering interview, and the other got a technical interview that was more about whether the candidate could reason about data. Source 12How Palantir built the ultimate founder factory | Nabeel S. Qureshi (YouTube uploaded en-US captions)PublisherLenny's Podcast, YouTubeSource typerecorded talk or interview That was Palantir as he knew it; do not plan around it.
One report shows how the gap feels in a real round. A candidate who said they had about eight years of consulting experience posted, in May 2026, about their Google FDE (L4-L5) algorithm round: the problem was along the lines of prefix evaluation, and they talked through an approach and could explain it, but chose a complex route and could not write a working version of the code. Source 13Finished with my Google FDE L4-L5 coding round yesterday. Feeling bad. (comment by u/serlagsalot)PublisherReddit r/LeetcodeDesiSource typecandidate report on Reddit One person, not a pattern, but notice which skill worked (explaining) and which did not (typing code that runs). Consulting trains the first. The round scores the second.
Titles to map from, and how to rewrite them
Never rename a past title. Change what the bullets under it prove. Accenture’s European FDE posting says assessment rests on demonstrated deployment experience and outcome ownership, not CV pattern matching. Source 5Forward Deployed Engineer (London, R00339251)PublisherAccenture careers (Workday)Source typecompany job posting Our free lesson on who hires FDEs and under which titles covers the other side of the mapping: which titles to search for.
| If your title was | Lead with |
|---|---|
| Analyst or associate at a strategy firm | The model, query or script behind the recommendation, and who used it |
| Technology or senior consultant | The integration or migration code you wrote, not the workstream you led |
| Implementation consultant | Configuration you turned into code: scripts, API calls, data loads, and what broke at go-live |
| Professional services or consulting engineer | What you built on the client’s side, and how you supported it after launch |
| Data or analytics consultant | Pipelines that ran on a schedule, not one-off analyses |
| Engagement manager | Scoping and delivery with a technical team; also read the strategist roles below |
Here is a bullet rewritten the way we teach it. It is a hypothetical: the after bullet describes a different piece of work from the same engagement, the one where you wrote the code, because that is the evidence to lead with.
Before: “Led the operating model workstream for a national insurer’s claims transformation; presented the target state to the executive committee.”
After: “Wrote the Python and SQL job that matched over a million claims across two policy systems. Found the duplicate-key bug that overstated open claims by about three percent, and ran the job weekly for the finance team for five months until their IT group took it over.”
The second bullet names a language, a scale, a system, a bug you found, its consequence and a person who relied on the output. That is the kind of long-term solution Palantir’s line points at.
If you cannot write the after bullet
That is the gap, not a wording problem. Build the evidence with the plan below, then write the bullet.
The coding gap plan
This plan is ours.
Closing the coding gap
- Find out which coding round you face. Rounds differ: the consultant above faced an algorithm problem, and Palantir publishes a guide on working inside existing systems. Source 15Palantir Careers | Getting HiredPublisherPalantirSource typecompany hiring page Our free lesson on what FDE coding rounds test sorts employer pages and candidate reports by round type, so you drill the right thing.
- Type, don’t talk. Every practice problem ends in code that runs, on a timer. Speak while you type, not instead of typing.
- Do the practical build. Work the messy CSV question end to end: parse, reject with reasons, and prove every input line ended up somewhere.
- Ship one small thing a real person uses. Run it for weeks and fix what breaks.
- Rehearse the deep dive. Take that project through the project deep dive question until you can defend every design choice.
A worked example: take the simple route first
The candidate above chose a complex route. The habit to build is the opposite: say the simplest correct approach, write it, test it, then improve it. For prefix evaluation (- * 2 3 4 means 2 * 3 - 4), the simple route is to scan from the right with a stack. Using Fraction keeps division exact, so you never explain a float rounding error:
from fractions import Fraction
import operator as op
OPS = {"+": op.add, "-": op.sub,
"*": op.mul, "/": op.truediv}
def eval_prefix(expr):
stack = []
for tok in reversed(expr.split()):
if tok not in OPS:
stack.append(Fraction(tok))
continue
if len(stack) < 2:
raise ValueError(tok)
a = stack.pop() # a is left
b = stack.pop()
stack.append(OPS[tok](a, b))
if len(stack) != 1:
raise ValueError("malformed")
return stack[0]
What you say while writing it is the part a consultant can learn fastest:
“I’ll scan right to left, so operands are on the stack before their operator. The first pop is the left operand, which matters for minus and divide. If an operator is short of operands, I raise with that operator, so the error says where the input broke, instead of returning a wrong number. It’s linear in the number of tokens. Let me run
- * 2 3 4, which should give 2, and+ 1, which should fail.”
Then run it. A working simple version beats a clever one. For the harder version, nested function calls with error positions, work the nested expression question.
Telling the move as a story in the interview
Expect to be asked why you are leaving consulting. Watch how you describe the old job and the new one. One candidate wrote on Hacker News, in July 2017, that while interviewing for a Palantir FDE role they concluded it was a software engineer consultant job they had held before, and that calling their earlier experience consulting rubbed the interviewer the wrong way. Source 16Hacker News comment by CydeWeys on 'NYPD is canceling its Palantir contract'PublisherHacker NewsSource typecandidate comment on Hacker News One old report, but it fits Palantir’s own line: do not call the job consulting.
Words that work for “why leave consulting?”:
“Most of my engagements ended when the client accepted the recommendation, and someone else built it. On my last one I built the matching job myself and supported it after we left. That was the part I wanted more of, and in this role it’s the job.”
Our free lesson on the bridge story turns this into a two-minute answer that holds up under follow-ups.
For “how much code have you written?”, be exact and do not inflate:
“In consulting, mostly Python and SQL scripts for data work, and none of it on a product team. Since then I’ve shipped a small tool that runs weekly for a real user. Here’s what broke in the first month and what I changed.”
Practice the full version against the “why FDE and not software engineering?” question; the follow-ups have the same shape when the other job is consulting. Our free lesson on telling the FDE role apart from its neighbors gives you the vocabulary to say what is different about the job you want.
Common mistakes to fix before the loop:
- Answering design questions with a framework slide. Name the tables, the APIs and the failure you would handle first. The next section shows the difference.
- Saying “we” for everything. Say “I” for the code you wrote, or the interviewer will assume you wrote none.
- Explaining instead of coding. In a coding round, a working simple answer beats a described elegant one.
A case answer, consultant style and FDE style
This prompt sounds like a case, which is the trap:
“A hospital network wants to cut appointment no-shows. How would you approach it?”
The consultant answer:
“I’d segment the drivers into patient, provider and process factors, then prioritize the levers by impact and feasibility.”
It could describe any problem.
The FDE answer:
“First, where do appointments live? Probably the scheduling system’s appointments table, with a status field, plus a reminder log. I’d join those to find the no-show rate by reminder channel. Then I’d ship an SMS reminder on the existing messaging API for one clinic, and handle the failure I expect first: wrong phone numbers.”
The second answer still structures the problem, around tables, one clinic and a named failure. Keep your structuring habit and point it at systems.
The decomposition method lesson teaches this move, and the free practice case lets you try it against an AI client who pushes back.
Consulting firms that now hire FDEs
You may not have to leave your industry to change your job. In H-1B filings certified from October 2024 to June 2026 with “forward deployed” in the job title, Boston Consulting Group had 57 of the 387 filings, second only to Palantir’s 72. Candidates describe coding in that process too.
