If your loop is next week
- Send your recruiter the questions in the checklist below, headcount first.
- Write the
ToolBudgetclass by hand, with no run button, then trace it out loud. - Rehearse the opening questions for the CTO until you can ask them without notes.
- Design one of your own in a plain text doc, with a step budget and a way to test it.
- Run the free practice case once, out loud.
Which Google role you are interviewing for
Google uses the exact title Forward Deployed Engineer, with numeric levels, such as “Forward Deployed Engineer IV, GenAI, Google Cloud” and “Forward Deployed Engineer III, Generative AI, Google Cloud”. The title turns up across several teams. Partner FDEs build agentic solutions with Google Cloud partners, inside the partners’ customers’ environments. None of this describes the interview. Our reading is that it tells you what the job is for: getting agents into production at customers, directly and through partners. So bring one story in this shape: the customer, the agent you shipped, how you knew it worked, and the number that moved. Practice it with take me through one project in depth, which is free, and a prototype that ended up in production.
What Google publishes about hiring
Google publishes one page, How we hire, and it covers all roles. It is not specific to FDEs. Source 28Our hiring process - Google CareersPublisherGoogleSource typecompany hiring page Here is what it says, stage by stage.
- Length. The page gives a rough length for the process in weeks, once interviews for a role have started, and says the process and timeline vary by role. Source 28Our hiring process - Google CareersPublisherGoogleSource typecompany hiring page It covers every role at Google, so it tells you little about an FDE loop in particular.
- Assessments. Before interviews, you may be asked to take the Google Hiring Assessment, which measures workstyle skills, and possibly a role-related assessment such as a coding exercise. Source 28Our hiring process - Google CareersPublisherGoogleSource typecompany hiring page Some roles ask for a small project first, such as a case study or writing or code samples. Source 28Our hiring process - Google CareersPublisherGoogleSource typecompany hiring page
- Recruiter conversations. You will typically have one or two shorter conversations with your recruiter, over phone or video. Source 28Our hiring process - Google CareersPublisherGoogleSource typecompany hiring page
- The panel. Then comes a panel of interviews, over video or in person, “with a rotating cast of Googlers”. Source 28Our hiring process - Google CareersPublisherGoogleSource typecompany hiring page Google’s FDE postings add that in most instances the position requires in-person interviews. - Scoring. Google’s How we hire page, which covers all roles, says every candidate is assessed using clear rubrics. Source 28Our hiring process - Google CareersPublisherGoogleSource typecompany hiring page Google does not publish the rubrics, for FDEs or anyone else.
- AI tools. The page says AI tools are not permitted during your interviews. Source 28Our hiring process - Google CareersPublisherGoogleSource typecompany hiring page

The loop, as people describe it
Everything in this section comes from people who posted about their own interviews, with the month, and the role or level when they named one. No one publishes how often any of these shapes happens. The evidence map shows how to weigh reports like these.
Here are the reports side by side. Each poster described a coding or scenario question and a design or RRK round, and six of the seven describe that second round as about agents. The two rejected candidates who quoted their feedback were marked down on different rounds: one candidate reported, in May 2026, that the coding round “wasn’t strong”, and a Blind poster reported, that month, that the RRK was “not technical enough to face customers”. The posters call the design round Role-Related Knowledge, or RRK. Google publishes no round names for its FDE roles. One candidate wrote, in July 2026 and before taking either round, that after a recruiter screen of about 35 minutes they were told of two back-to-back 60-minute rounds, RRK and coding, with Python mandatory. Here is what differs from one report to the next.
- Whether there is an assessment first. One candidate for a Google Cloud FDE I role reported, in May 2026, taking an online assessment before the recruiter call. Source 11FDE Interview Experience at Google (L4)PublisherBlind (teamblind.com)Source typecandidate report on Blind An FDE III candidate who passed the coding round said, before their design round, that they would pick the workflow/enterprise option over the one on image and video generation, and later reported very positive feedback on both interviews. The press picked up the short loop too. The Pragmatic Engineer reported, in May 2026, that it was “hearing” Google’s FDE process had been cut to as few as two interviews in two days, and it linked a single X post as its source. The RRK round post goes deeper on the design round, with a worked answer to a different agentic design prompt.
After the interviews: team matching and headcount
Passing the interviews is not the same as an offer. Several posters describe waiting for a team, or for headcount, after good feedback.
- One poster at L5 wrote, in August 2026, that they had cleared all the interviews and were stuck in team match, and in another thread that there was no headcount. Source 44Google FDE II and III, Headcount Filled. (post by u/Efficient-Day-5062)PublisherReddit r/FAANGrecruitingSource typecandidate report on Reddit

Headcount can also stop a loop early, or leave a finished one with nowhere to go. One Blind poster wrote, in June 2026, that their interviews were canceled because the positions were filled, and a commenter in a Blind thread about Google FDE interviews wrote, in July 2026, that they went through the full loop before learning there was no headcount (the commenter did not name the company or role). Send this:
“Before I schedule, can you confirm the team has open headcount at this level, and whether a pass goes straight to a team or into team match?”
Google does not publish how long team matching takes or how long results stay valid. After you pass, ask your recruiter both, and ask for the answer in writing. The team matching post covers what to do while you wait.
How to prepare for each stage
This is our method, built from what Google publishes and what the reports name. It is not a rubric Google publishes.
The recruiter screen and your level
Settle your level early, and learn to translate it. The postings name levels in Roman numerals, such as FDE III and IV. Source 1Forward Deployed Engineer IV, GenAI, Google Cloud — Google CareersPublisherGoogleSource typecompany job postingSource 2Forward Deployed Engineer III, Generative AI, Google Cloud — Google CareersPublisherGoogleSource typecompany job posting Posters write L4, L5 and L6, and two Blind posters paired the two: one interviewing for FDE III, GenAI wrote L5, and one interviewing for FDE 4 wrote L6. The down-leveled offer post walks through how Google’s FDE III and IV bands overlap.
Then ask the recruiter what no public source settles. Each question below comes from a gap in the reports. Posters described a prep document for the coding round, a recruiter who said Python was mandatory and the design would happen in a Google Doc, and headcount that ran out after the loop. Ask your Google recruiter
- Does the team have open headcount at my level now, or does a pass go to team match first?
- Is there an official prep document for the coding round, and can you send it?
- Is Python required, and does the coding platform run code?
- Will the design round happen in a Google Doc, and will I get a choice of track?
- Is there an online assessment before the interviews?
- Are the interviews in person or on video?
- Can I use AI tools in any round?
- If I pass and no team is ready, how long does my result stay valid?

For the class-writing half, practice on paper. Here is an exercise we wrote to that shape, not a question Google asked: a small class that caps how much each customer’s agent can spend on tool calls in a rolling window. Write it without running it.
from collections import defaultdict, deque
class ToolBudget:
"""Caps how much each tenant's agent can spend on tool calls
in a rolling window, e.g. 100 units per 60 seconds."""
def __init__(self, limit, window_s):
if limit <= 0 or window_s <= 0:
raise ValueError("limit and window must be positive")
self.limit = limit
self.window_s = window_s
self._calls = defaultdict(deque) # tenant -> deque of (time, cost)
self._spent = defaultdict(int) # tenant -> cost in window
def _expire(self, tenant, now):
calls = self._calls[tenant]
while calls and calls[0][0] <= now - self.window_s:
_, cost = calls.popleft()
self._spent[tenant] -= cost
def allow(self, tenant, cost, now):
if cost <= 0:
raise ValueError("cost must be positive")
self._expire(tenant, now)
if self._spent[tenant] + cost > self.limit:
return False
self._calls[tenant].append((now, cost))
self._spent[tenant] += cost
return True
def remaining(self, tenant, now):
self._expire(tenant, now)
return self.limit - self._spent[tenant]
Now run it by hand, out loud, the way you would on a platform with no run button. Take a budget with limit=10 and window_s=60:
allow("acme", 6, now=0)returnsTrue.allow("acme", 5, now=30)returnsFalse, because6 + 5is over the limit.allow("acme", 4, now=30)returnsTrue: landing exactly on the limit is allowed.allow("globex", 10, now=30)returnsTrue, because one tenant never spends another’s budget.allow("acme", 6, now=60)returnsTrue, because the first call has just left the window. That is the boundary case: a call exactlywindow_sold no longer counts.
Then say the design choices before you are asked:
“Time is passed in, not read from the clock, so I can test it without sleeping. Each call is amortized O(1). Memory is one entry per recent call plus one per tenant, and a tenant’s old entries clear only on its next call, so tenants that go quiet need a periodic sweep. If two threads share it, I’d guard it with a lock; if several servers share it, the state moves to a shared store.”
Prepare the scenario shape as well. One poster described a real-scenario question about streaming. Source 13Google FDE vs Remain Amazon SDEPublisherBlind (teamblind.com)Source typecandidate report on BlindSource 14Google L5 FDE vs Remain Amazon L5 SDEPublisherBlind (teamblind.com)Source typecandidate report on Blind Work through trip summaries from a stream of ride events, late events included, and a stream consumer with backpressure, and state the complexity of your answer without being asked, as in state the time and space complexity of your solution. Model a small inventory system with classes is a second class-design exercise, and a per-user token bucket rate limiter, which is free, takes the ToolBudget idea across several processes.

The RRK or agentic design round
The L4 poster on Blind wrote, in July 2026, that the round was a role-play in which the interviewer acted as the CTO of a company that wanted a smart AI-powered system, and that the discussion ran from problem discovery and requirements through scoping, architecture, deployment, scalability, security and evaluation. Watch the clock while you ask questions. One candidate’s report on Aced, for a mid-level FDE role in Poland, says the interviewer gave a very abstract description of the system, which the candidate believes was intentional, and that by the time the questions were done, time was almost up. Source 51Google Forward Deployed Engineer Interview ExperiencePublisherAced (formerly Exponent)Source typecandidate’s personal write-up Ask the questions that change the design, say your assumptions for the rest, and get a first version on the page early.
Here is what that sounds like, on a practice prompt we wrote, not one Google asked.
CTO: “We’re a regional bank. Relationship managers spend hours pulling numbers for client reviews. I want an AI agent that does it.”
You: “Before I draw anything, a few questions. Who reads the output: the manager, or the client? Where do the numbers live, and can the agent read them with the manager’s own permissions? And what does one wrong number cost you: an awkward call, or a compliance finding?”
Each question changes the design. Who reads it decides whether a person checks every draft. Where the data lives decides the tools and the permissions. The cost of a wrong number decides how strict the tests are.
Say the answers are: internal drafts for the manager, a warehouse the bank already queries, and a compliance finding. Say those assumptions out loud, then type version one into the doc as plain text, which is quick to write and easy to change while the CTO talks:
Manager asks in chat
-> agent (fixed tool list, manager's own credentials)
get_accounts(client_id) read-only
run_approved_query(name, params) vetted SQL only
fetch_notes(client_id) read-only
-> draft brief: every figure links to the query that produced it
-> manager edits and sends; the agent never sends
Limits: no write tools, step budget, refuse queries off the list
Evals: past briefs with known figures; a figure that does not
match its source fails the run
Walk it top to bottom, one sentence per line, then close with how it ships:
“I’d ship it as drafts to a handful of managers, count the figures they correct, and widen it only when that count stays at zero.”
Expect the CTO to push on one line. If it is the query tool, say why a list of vetted queries beats letting the model write SQL: every number traces back to a query someone reviewed, and an instruction hidden in a client note cannot make the agent write a query nobody vetted. If it is the step budget, say what happens when the agent hits it: it stops and hands back what it has, with a note, instead of looping. The ToolBudget class from the coding section is the same idea, applied per customer over a time window.
Go below the boxes. A commenter in a Blind thread about Google’s FDE interview wrote, in August 2026, that the round can stay at high-level agent orchestration but that they went lower, to prompts, state machines, retries and handling hallucinations (the commenter did not name the company or role). For follow-up questions to practice, one Blind post about a Senior FDE phone screen, from July 2026, lists agent orchestration, safety guardrails, stuck agents or infinite loops, monitoring and human-in-the-loop workflows, plus a short identifier-conversion coding problem and a repo-wide migration discussion. Source 52Google Forward Deployed Engineer Interview Experience - BlindPublisherBlindSource typecandidate report on Blind The poster said they collect interview stories for a website, so treat it as a practice list, not a first-hand account. For the guardrails item, work through defending a support agent against prompt injection; for the rest, have one sentence ready on how you would detect it and what the agent does next.
Prepare a classic answer too. A Reddit commenter, the one at the top of this guide, wrote, in June 2026, that the design questions were classic system design, presented as a production agent, and that after a strong hire in coding and mixed reviews on the RRK, they were not considered (the commenter did not name the company). Need immediate referralPublisherBlind (teamblind.com)Source typecandidate report on Blind Our reading: the round wants both depth and a way of explaining it to a customer. Enterprise system design is not ‘design a social network’ covers the enterprise version.
If you are offered a choice of track, pick the one you have built in, and have one real system of your own ready to draw.
If you come from data or enterprise platforms
If you have built pipelines, warehouses or data platforms rather than agents, a lot of this loop is yours already.
- The streaming scenario is home ground. Say late events, watermarks and idempotent writes before you are asked, and practice with trip summaries from a stream of ride events and a stream consumer with backpressure.
- The gap is agent-specific. Tool permissions, step budgets and evals are what to learn first. Start with the evaluation harness question and the bank opening above.
- The work sits where you already do. Under the partner fund above, Google will embed FDEs alongside consulting firms and systems integrators. A practice plan for each round
Everything in the Free column costs nothing; the In Pro column is where the practice goes deeper.
| Round | Free | In Pro |
|---|---|---|
| Coding | The ToolBudget exercise above; token bucket; what FDE coding rounds test | OOP inventory; trip summaries; stream consumer |
| Agent design | Eval harness; prompt injection; fine-tune or retrieve; how you know it works | Claim intake on a model already bought |
| Level and offer | What level are you? | An offer a level down |
| Your stories | One project in depth | A prototype in production |
Everything in the In Pro column, including the claim-intake case, where an insurer has already licensed a language model and wants it taking first reports of claims, is in Pro, which starts with a 7-day free trial.
You can practice coding by yourself. The CTO role-play, where someone asks what you would ask first and why your design holds up, is the part that goes wrong under pressure. The free case is not about agents, but it drills the part that comes before any diagram: scoping a vague ask out loud. The free practice case puts you in front of an AI customer with a vague problem on a 10-minute clock: you scope it, propose a first version and say how you would know it works, then a scorecard shows what you asked and what you missed. It is free with a sign-in.

8 open questions What neither Google nor any report we found says
An FDE loop from Google
Google publishes no round list, rubric or scoring guide for its FDE roles. Every first-party statement about process on this page covers all Google roles, except the postings’ line that interviews are in person in most instances.
Assessments for FDE roles
Whether FDE applicants take the Google Hiring Assessment or a role-related coding exercise. The How we hire page names both for roles in general, and the FDE postings do not mention an assessment. Reports differ.
What the rubrics contain
Google says every candidate is assessed using clear rubrics, and does not publish them for any role.
What nobody publishes
No employer publishes a pass rate or a round weight for this loop, and no source gives a reliable time from the interviews to a team match or an offer.
How long results stay valid
Google does not publish it. Posters quote what recruiters told them, and the periods they quote differ.
The AI assistant pilot and FDE roles
Whether the AI assistant pilot that Entrepreneur reported reaches any FDE interview. Nothing we found ties it to FDE roles.
The AI Outcome Customer Engineer loop
We found no candidate report from the AI Outcome Customer Engineer loop, so we cannot say how it differs from the FDE loop.
Whether posted ranges are base pay
The postings list a range followed by a bonus target, equity and benefits, without saying whether the range is base salary or total pay.

Questions people ask
What is the Google FDE interview process, and what do candidates report?
Google does not publish an FDE-specific process. Its How we hire page, for all roles, describes one or two shorter recruiter conversations, then a panel of interviews over video or in person, with every candidate assessed using clear rubrics, and it says you may take a workstyle assessment or a coding exercise first. Two posters on Blind who finished the FDE loop in July 2026 each described two interviews: a coding round and a design round about agentic systems.Source 11FDE Interview Experience at Google (L4)PublisherBlind (teamblind.com)Source typecandidate report on BlindSource 12Google FDE AdvicePublisherBlind (teamblind.com)Source typecandidate report on BlindSource 28Our hiring process - Google CareersPublisherGoogleSource typecompany hiring page
What do candidates report about the RRK round in the Google FDE interview?
Posters call the design round Role-Related Knowledge, or RRK. Google publishes no round names for FDE roles. One candidate reported, in May 2026, an RRK round on multi-agent systems, RAG and GenAI implementation, and another wrote, in July 2026 and before the round, that the recruiter described it as one real-world business problem needing a scalable AI solution, designed in a Google Doc.Source 30Rejected by Google (L3 FDE) after "killing" the domain round and solving the coding prompt. Is the Google FDE coding round LeetCode? What candidates report
Reports differ. Posters on Blind described the coding question as anything from almost LeetCode easy or medium to medium-hard, and one poster who got an L5 offer in August 2026 said there was no LeetCode, only a real-scenario question about streaming. A poster preparing in July 2026 wrote that the official prep document describes 30–50 lines of Python on a static platform with no code execution, evaluating Python OOP and fundamental software system design.Source 12Google FDE AdvicePublisherBlind (teamblind.com)Source typecandidate report on BlindSource 13Google FDE vs Remain Amazon SDEPublisherBlind (teamblind.com)Source typecandidate report on BlindSource 14Google L5 FDE vs Remain Amazon L5 SDEPublisherBlind (teamblind.com)Source typecandidate report on BlindSource 31Google Rejected for FDE. What L level is Google FDE III? What Blind posters report
Google’s postings use Roman numerals, such as Forward Deployed Engineer III and IV, while Blind posters describe levels as L4, L5 and L6. Two Blind posters paired them: one interviewing for FDE III, GenAI wrote L5, in August 2026, and one interviewing for FDE 4 wrote L6, in July 2026. What do candidates report happens after they pass the Google FDE interviews?
Team matching. Posters describe very different waits: one L5 poster in New York reported, in August 2026, less than 2 weeks between interview and team matching, while others wrote that they were stuck in team match or told to wait for headcount. Google does not publish how long it takes, so ask your recruiter what is blocking the match.Source 13Google FDE vs Remain Amazon SDEPublisherBlind (teamblind.com)Source typecandidate report on BlindSource 14Google L5 FDE vs Remain Amazon L5 SDEPublisherBlind (teamblind.com)Source typecandidate report on BlindSource 40Do not interview for Google FDE roles it's messed upPublisherBlind (teamblind.com)Source typecandidate report on BlindSource 41Google FDE no headcount waitPublisherBlind (teamblind.com)Source typecandidate report on BlindSource 42Do Google FDE interviews have the same question pool as SWEPublisherBlind (teamblind.com)Source typecandidate report on BlindSource 44Google FDE II and III, Headcount Filled.
