You have two postings open side by side. One is a startup’s first forward deployed hire, with a line about shaping the function. The other is one of many near-identical requisitions at a large company that already has an FDE organization, managers and a delivery model. The short version: at a startup you are often one of the first customer-facing engineers, you shape the role, and you may join sales calls; in a big company’s FDE organization you join a defined team with set roles and levels. The loop and the offer differ too, and the size of the team matters more than the size of the company. If the role itself is new to you, start with our guide to what a forward deployed engineer is; this post covers only what company size changes.
Where the postings are
You will meet both kinds of posting. In Bloomberry’s analysis of 1,000 FDE job postings supplied by the jobs-data provider Revealera, 58% of roles were at companies with 11 to 200 employees. Source 1What I learned analyzing 1K forward deployed engineer jobsPublisherBloomberrySource typeindependent analysis In Paraform’s analysis of the companies hiring FDEs on its platform, 59% were Seed to Series A, 35% were Series B or later and 27% were AI-native; a company can fall in more than one group, so the shares total more than 100%. Source 2How to hire a forward deployed engineer in 2026PublisherParaformSource typeindependent analysis
Our own count looks at the other end. In our September 2026 count of public postings on the 103 job boards we checked, the employers with the most matching postings were Databricks (117), Palantir (110) and Salesforce (92), followed by Google (57), ElevenLabs (38), Microsoft (29) and OpenAI (22). So a lot of hiring sits at small and early-stage companies, while a handful of employers, most of them large, each post many roles. They are not the same job at different salaries.
What the job looks like at a startup or on a young team
A young FDE function is built by the first people in it. Ramp is a useful case, with a caveat: it is no longer small (its press page, summarizing a June 2026 Bloomberg article, says it reached a $44 billion valuation Source 4Press - Media Resources | RampPublisherRampSource typecompany website), but its FDE team is young, which is what matters here. Ramp’s engineering blog says FDE at Ramp began to take shape in fall 2023, out of the need to scale enterprise. Source 5Forward Deployed Engineering (Leo Mehr, Director, Engineering)PublisherRamp Builders (engineering blog)Source typecompany blog As of its August 2025 blog post, the team had grown from 2 to 16 FDEs in the preceding year and a half, and 7 of the 16 were former founders. Source 5Forward Deployed Engineering (Leo Mehr, Director, Engineering)PublisherRamp Builders (engineering blog)Source typecompany blog
Three traits show up in how early FDE teams describe themselves.
You work the whole customer lifecycle. Ramp’s FDE team works with customers from prospect in the sales funnel through implementation to long-tail support. Source 5Forward Deployed Engineering (Leo Mehr, Director, Engineering)PublisherRamp Builders (engineering blog)Source typecompany blog The Pragmatic Engineer reported, in August 2025, that many startups employing FDEs use them to help win customers, with Sales offering an FDE to a customer who is undecided. Source 6Forward Deployed Engineers (Gergely Orosz)PublisherThe Pragmatic EngineerSource typenews report So be ready to join calls before the contract is signed, not only after.
You may be the function. PostHog describes its own first FDE as fully remote and async, and calls that an experiment compared with the usual FDE setup. Source 7WTF is a forward deployed engineer? (and why everyone is hiring them)PublisherPostHog (Jina Yoon)Source typecompany blog Glean is not small either: it announced a Series F at a $7.2 billion valuation in June 2025. Source 8Glean Raises $150M Series F at $7.2B ValuationPublisherGleanSource typecompany website Yet it is at the founding stage for this role: as of September 2026, the only title on its job board containing “Forward Deployed” was “Founding Forward Deployed Engineer”. Source 9Glean job boardPublisherGlean (Greenhouse)Source typecompany job posting A founding hire writes the first runbook and decides what “done” means. Nobody hands you that.
Backgrounds vary more than you think. Baseten’s FDE lead writes that the team ranges from fifteen-year industry veterans to new grads and interns from a program with the University of Waterloo, and that many members are ex-founders. Source 10Forward deployed engineering on the frontier of AIPublisherBasetenSource typecompany blog A young team is not only for senior engineers; it is for people who act like owners.
A first week, as an illustration
This is a made-up example, not a report. Monday, you join a sales call with a prospect who is not sure the product fits their data. Tuesday, you write a throwaway script to prove it does. Wednesday, the prospect signs, and the script becomes the first version of the integration. Thursday, you notice every customer will need the same step, so you raise it with the product team. Friday, you write it down for the next FDE. Four jobs in one week.
What the job looks like inside a big company’s FDE organization
Large companies are building FDE organizations on purpose, with money and structure behind them.
- AWS. Amazon announced, in June 2026, a dedicated AWS Forward Deployed Engineering organization backed by a $1 billion investment, designed so that customers are self-sufficient when a deployment ends. - Microsoft. Source 13Microsoft commits $2.5 billion and 6,000 employees to new AI implementation unitPublisherCNBCSource typenews report
- Salesforce. Salesforce’s blog says it launched its FDE team in April 2025 and that some FDEs work in pods of one and two FDEs. Source 14Today's Hottest Role: Forward Deployed EngineerPublisherSalesforce 360 BlogSource typecompany blog
- OpenAI, the unit. Colin Jarvis, who leads forward deployed engineering at OpenAI, said on a South Park Commons panel in May 2026 that the FDE unit is a business unit separate from solutions engineering and solutions architecture, and that it works only about 10 engagements at a time. Source 15The Future of Forward Deployed Engineering | OpenAI, Ramp, Nominal, DatalandPublisherSouth Park Commons (YouTube)Source typerecorded talk or interview
- OpenAI, the team. He also said the team started with only FDEs, then added a role to handle account work, and has begun adding industry experts, such as chip verification engineers and life-sciences scientists, within vertical teams. Source 15The Future of Forward Deployed Engineering | OpenAI, Ramp, Nominal, DatalandPublisherSouth Park Commons (YouTube)Source typerecorded talk or interview
Between them, those descriptions show named team shapes (Salesforce’s pods), other roles beside you (Microsoft, OpenAI) and a stated goal for a deployment (AWS). There, you are less likely to invent the job and more likely to go deep on one part of it, with someone else owning the account.
The exception: a founding team inside a giant
Size of company and size of FDE team are different things. Microsoft’s Windows Platform and Developers organization says it is standing up a founding Forward Deployed Engineering team that embeds with strategic partners and enterprise developer organizations, measured on adoption, not revenue. Source 16Microsoft Careers: Senior Forward Deployed Engineer (WPD)PublisherMicrosoftSource typecompany job posting Anthropic’s FDE postings describe hires as “founding FDEs” who help shape its forward-deployed motion. Source 17Forward Deployed Engineer (New York City, NY; San Francisco, CA; Seattle, WA)PublisherAnthropic (Greenhouse job board)Source typecompany job posting
Age is not the whole story either. Palantir’s organization is long established, yet its US Government FDSE posting compares the role to that of a startup CTO, working in small teams with minimal supervision and owning projects end to end. Source 18Forward Deployed Software Engineer - US Government (Washington, D.C.) - Palantir on LeverPublisherPalantir Technologies (Lever)Source typecompany job posting
So ask how old the team is and how small the unit you would work in is, not how big the company is.
How the interview loop differs
The published material does not split cleanly by company size. Leo Mehr, Ramp’s Director of Engineering, said in June 2026 that FDE candidates at Ramp face the same technical bar and must pass the software engineering interview loop. Source 19What is a Forward Deployed Engineer? (FDE Explained) feat. Leo Mehr of Ramp (YouTube auto-generated English captions)PublisherdearCC (Clara Shih), YouTubeSource typerecorded talk or interview So a young team does not mean a lighter technical bar. What differs is what the hiring leaders say they look for.
On a young team, the screen leans toward ownership. Mehr said in July 2026 that having founded a company is some signal of higher ownership, and that being an early engineer at a company usually signals risk tolerance and ownership. Single candidate reports show how varied startup loops can be. One candidate reported, in August 2026, that an FDE process at an early-stage AI-native startup included a 60-minute AI coding round building from scratch, followed by a system design round. Big companies publish processes too, so read what each one covers. What to prepare differently
This is our advice, not a description of how any interviewer scores you.
- For a startup, bring an ownership story. Prepare one project where you took something from a vague customer problem to production and made the calls yourself. Tell me about a project you owned end to end has a structure and a model answer to test yours against.
- For a startup, know why this company. Our free question Why this company, and why now? shows how to ground the answer in the product and the customers, not the funding round.
- For both, prepare for level: ask when it is decided, then work through What level do you think you are, and why?
- For both, practice the customer part out loud. Neither kind of employer hires an FDE who can code but freezes in front of a customer. The free practice case puts you in front of an AI customer who reveals facts only when you ask the right questions; it needs a sign-in.
One project, told two ways
A made-up illustration: the same project, told twice.
To a startup: “The customer’s data export broke every night and nobody owned it. I got on a call with their ops lead, scoped a first version that week, shipped it, and wrote the runbook the next FDE used.”
To a big company: “On a three-person pod with a deployment strategist, I owned the data integration. I agreed the success measure with the strategist up front, shipped it, and handed it to the customer’s team with a runbook, so they ran it without us after handover.”
What changed: the startup version stresses deciding alone, and the big-company version stresses owning your part inside a team and leaving the customer able to run it without you.
How the offer differs
More pay data lives in our FDE salary guide.
At both kinds of company, one posting can cover several levels. Glean’s Founding FDE posting says its range covers multiple levels, with level set during the interview Source 9Glean job boardPublisherGlean (Greenhouse)Source typecompany job posting, and Databricks’ AI FDE posting is marked for all levels. Source 26AI Engineer – Forward Deployed Engineering (AI FDE)PublisherDatabricks (careers site / Greenhouse)Source typecompany job posting So ask every recruiter when level is decided; your interview performance may be part of the offer.
Don’t assume the young team’s band is the lower one. Posted bands do not split cleanly by company size, and the salary guide lists them by company, with dates, so check both of your postings there before you negotiate.
Equity is where startup and big-company offers differ most. Stock in a public company can usually be sold once it vests; equity in a private company usually cannot be sold until a sale, an IPO or a company-run tender offer. FDE equity: RSUs and options explains what to ask about each kind of grant, and how to compare two FDE offers walks through base, equity and bonus separately.
Which one should you pick?
This is our advice, not market data.
- Pick the young team if you want to write the playbook, you are comfortable joining sales calls, and you can live with unclear scope and equity you may not be able to sell for years.
- Pick the established organization if you want a defined level and ladder, colleagues in named roles (a deployment strategist, an account lead) and equity you can sell once it vests, and you are happy to go deep on one part of each deployment.
- If you are early in your career, ask who reviews your code and who you learn from. A founding role can mean nobody does.
Questions that tell you which job it is
The posting gives you the first signals.
| If the posting says | It suggests |
|---|---|
| “Founding” in the title | You build the function |
| Work with sales to close deals | Pre-sales is part of the job |
| A pod or named partner roles | A defined team shape |
| “All levels” | Level is set in the loop |
For examples of each: Glean and Anthropic use “founding” Source 9Glean job boardPublisherGlean (Greenhouse)Source typecompany job postingSource 17Forward Deployed Engineer (New York City, NY; San Francisco, CA; Seattle, WA)PublisherAnthropic (Greenhouse job board)Source typecompany job posting, The Pragmatic Engineer cited a Ramp job ad asking FDEs to work with sales and go-to-market teams to close deals Source 6Forward Deployed Engineers (Gergely Orosz)PublisherThe Pragmatic EngineerSource typenews report, Salesforce describes pods Source 14Today's Hottest Role: Forward Deployed EngineerPublisherSalesforce 360 BlogSource typecompany blog, and Databricks’ AI FDE posting is marked for all levels. Source 26AI Engineer – Forward Deployed Engineering (AI FDE)PublisherDatabricks (careers site / Greenhouse)Source typecompany job posting Our lesson on reading an FDE job posting covers every field.
Then ask. The hiring manager can answer all of these.
Ask before you accept
- How many FDEs are on this team today, and who did this work before the team existed?
- Is there a written playbook for a deployment, or would I be writing it?
- Do FDEs join calls before a customer signs, or only after?
- How many engagements does one FDE carry at a time?
- Who else works each deployment: a strategist, an account lead, a domain expert?
- How is the team measured: revenue, adoption, or customers running on their own?
- What level is this role, and when in the process is level decided?
- When a customer needs something the product lacks, who builds it?
A small team with no playbook, pre-sales calls and “we’re figuring that out” on measurement is a startup-shaped job, whatever the company’s size. A team with pods and a stated goal per engagement is an organization-shaped job. For more, see questions to ask at the end of an FDE interview.
Where to go next
Pick the two postings you are most serious about, check each against the posting signals above, and take the “Ask before you accept” list to your first recruiter call. Then prepare the level answer and the ownership story for both. The opening module, the FDE role decoded, is free: it covers what forward deployed engineers do, who hires FDEs and under which titles and how to read a posting line by line, so you know which job you are interviewing for before the first call. When you are ready for the rounds themselves, Pro adds the later modules and every question’s model answer, with a 7-day free trial: see the pricing page.
Questions people ask
Are most FDE jobs at startups, according to posting analyses?
In Bloomberry’s analysis of 1,000 FDE job postings, 58% of roles were at companies with 11 to 200 employees. That is one dataset with its own method, and it counts postings, not people hired. It does not tell you which employers post the most roles each, so look at both kinds of company.Source 1What I learned analyzing 1K forward deployed engineer jobsPublisherBloomberrySource typeindependent analysis
What does a young FDE team look for in a hire?
Ramp’s answer is on record. Ramp is no longer small, but its FDE team is young. Its Director of Engineering has said that founding a company, or being an early engineer somewhere, signals ownership, and Ramp’s engineering blog says drive, communication and the will to solve customer problems end to end matter more than technical perfection.Source 5Forward Deployed Engineering (Leo Mehr, Director, Engineering)PublisherRamp Builders (engineering blog)Source typecompany blogSource 20Leo Mehr - Ramp's $44B Bet on Services (YouTube auto-generated English captions)PublisherBasil Chatha, YouTubeSource typerecorded talk or interview
Do big companies pay FDEs more than startups?
Posted bands do not split cleanly by company size, and our salary guide lists them by company, with dates. The bigger difference is equity. Stock in a public company can usually be sold once it vests, while private-company equity usually cannot be sold until a sale, an IPO or a tender offer, so compare base, equity and bonus separately.
