An interviewer asks, “Why , and why now?” You quote a growth headline about FDE postings. They ask which dataset, over which months, and whether it counts posts or an index. If you can’t say, your strongest line becomes the one you walk back. This lesson gives you an answer that survives the follow-up: the gap FDE teams exist to close, the company’s own dated decision to build one, and a piece of your own work that fits.

The gap between an API and a working deployment

A model endpoint is a capability. A customer gets value only when it runs on their data, inside their permission model, in a workflow their staff already use. Closing that distance is engineering, in four pieces, each with a sentence to say when probed.

Connectors to systems of record. The data sits in an ERP, a ticketing system or a file share never built to feed a model. Ramp’s AI Solutions FDE posting, as of September 2026, asks for comfort working across APIs, integrations, data pipelines, customer systems and cloud infrastructure. Source 1Software Engineer, Forward Deployed AI Solutions @ RampPublisherRamp (Ashby job board)Source typecompany job posting

Say: “I’d pull tickets from their Zendesk incremental export API into a staging table and upsert on the ticket ID, so a replayed sync can’t double-count. On day one we agree who on their side owns the connector after we leave.”

Practice on a duplicate webhook and a validated file import.

Identity and permissions. Users may see only what they could already see, inside the customer’s cloud and network rules. Sierra’s Deployed Infrastructure Engineer posting, as of September 2026, covers configuration, permissioning, networking and provisioning in customer clouds. Source 2Deployed Infrastructure Engineer (San Francisco)PublisherSierra (Ashby)Source typecompany job posting

Say: “The assistant queries the document store with the user’s own token, not a service account, so it retrieves only what that person could open, and every retrieval is logged.”

Practice on the SSO design question.

Evals from the customer’s own examples. A demo prompt set proves nothing about their documents. Scale AI’s Frontier Agents FDE postings, as of September 2026, list deploying evaluation harnesses that use golden datasets, regression suites and LLM-as-a-Judge. Source 3Frontier Agents Engineer (Forward Deployed Engineering)PublisherScale AI (Greenhouse)Source typecompany job posting On a data platform with no model in it, the eval is a reconciliation: row counts and totals that match the source system after every load.

Say: “Before launch, their domain lead and I build the test set from their real cases and agree the pass mark in writing; it reruns on every prompt or model change.”

Practice on How do you know it works? and an evaluation harness.

A way back. Every change to a live customer system needs a person who approves it and a path to undo it. Decagon builds the approval step into its product: Duet Autopilot, announced in June 2026, requires human approval before any proposed change reaches production. Source 4Introducing Duet Autopilot: The self-improving agent for conversational AIPublisherDecagon blogSource typecompany blog

Say: “We roll out to one team first. If escalations rise past the line we agreed, we switch back to the pinned prompt and model, and their ops lead can do that without me.”

Practice on rolling out a risky change.

Why now

The gap is old. Three points explain the timing; only the first is our reading.

Say it as your reading:

“My read on why now: models made the capability cheap, so deployment became the bottleneck. A vendor paid on usage earns little from a pilot that stalls, so it pays engineers to close the gap. Closing that gap is the work I’ve been doing.”

Where the term comes from

Palantir says it pioneered the role: its posting, as of September 2026, says “we pioneered this unique position”. Who built teams, and when

The organizations are new; the FDEs inside them often are not. Between May and July 2026, OpenAI, Google Cloud, Databricks, AWS and Microsoft each announced a new deployment organization or new FDE hiring, yet Google Cloud and Databricks said FDEs were not new to them, and CNBC reported that Microsoft’s unit would include its existing FDEs. Teams that came first

The new organizations

Related, but not an FDE team: in May 2026 Anthropic announced a services company with Blackstone, Hellman & Friedman and Goldman Sachs, and it says “Applied AI engineers”, never forward deployed engineer. Why growth headlines disagree

Each dataset has its own window and unit, so none can be set beside another, and one is an index, not a count.

If an interviewer raises a headline:

“If you mean the Lightcast data reported by Fortune, that compares January to August 2026 with the same months of 2025. Source 23One of the fastest-growing jobs in Silicon Valley sends engineers straight to customers’ offices...PublisherFortune (Preston Fore)Source typenews report The trackers measure different things, so I don’t lean on them. What matters to me is that you built this team in [month and year] to [what your announcement says].”

How to read the growth numbers has the full method.

What a team’s age tells you

The team you would join is not the team in the announcement. The Pragmatic Engineer reported, in August 2025, that OpenAI’s began with two FDEs and had grown to more than 10; the Engineering Leadership newsletter reported, in August 2026, around 140 people, in an org that sits between go-to-market and product and research. Where the team sits tells you whose metrics you answer to: Google Cloud’s new AI organization sits inside its go-to-market team. Source 11Thomas Kurian LinkedIn postPublisherLinkedIn (Thomas Kurian, CEO Google Cloud)Source typecompany website Stage tells you the work. At a founding team, like the one Anthropic’s postings describe as of September 2026, you write the playbook as you go. Source 25Forward Deployed Engineer (New York City, NY; San Francisco, CA; Seattle, WA)PublisherAnthropic (Greenhouse job board)Source typecompany job posting At a program built for scale, you turn hand-run deployments into ones others repeat: Salesforce’s blog said, in November 2025, that it had committed to 1,000 FDEs and that some were starting to work in pods of one and two FDEs. Source 18Today's Hottest Role: Forward Deployed EngineerPublisherSalesforce 360 BlogSource typecompany blog

Ask:

  • “How many FDEs were here when you joined, and how many now?”
  • “Who wrote the deployment playbook you use today, and when did it last change?”
  • “When an FDE finds something the product can’t do, what happens next?”

Then choose your story: at a founding team, lead with ambiguity and a first playbook; at a scaled program, with handover and repeatability.

Two follow-ups, in one short exchange

After “why now”, expect a probe on whether the role is real; what FDEs do covers the product half.

Interviewer: “Isn’t FDE just professional services with a new name?”

You: “Sometimes the two sit together: Databricks said its new FDE organization brings its Professional Services organization under one roof. Source 12Forward Deployed Engineering: Delivering Business Outcomes with AI (Jason Martin)PublisherDatabricks BlogSource typecompany blog The difference I’d look for is whether what I learn at one customer changes the product. If it only changes that customer’s deployment, it’s services.”

Interviewer: “And if the title fades?”

You: “Then I’ll still be doing the four pieces of that gap: connectors, identity, evals from their data, and a way back. None of those depends on the title.”

What this means for your pitch

“Why now” has two halves: the company’s own dated decision, and why you are moving now, framed as a pull: what you have done enough of, and what this team’s stage lets you do that your current role cannot.

Three openings, built from what each company published; check each still stands. For Salesforce:

“You launched the FDE team in April 2025, and your November 2025 blog said you’re building a team of 1,000 FDEs. Source 18Today's Hottest Role: Forward Deployed EngineerPublisherSalesforce 360 BlogSource typecompany blog At that size deployments run on playbooks: I ran my team’s first deployments with no runbook, then wrote the one the next team used without me. Who owns the playbook now, and how does a field lesson get into it?”

For AWS:

“In June 2026 you put $1 billion behind an FDE organization designed so customers are self-sufficient when a deployment ends. Source 6AWS puts $1 billion into new AI unit to embed engineers with customers, joining growing wavePublisherCNBCSource typenews reportSource 13AWS invests $1 billion to embed AI forward deployed engineers with customersPublisherAbout AmazonSource typecompany blog Handover is what I’d most like to talk about: on my last project we left the customer’s team owning the connector and the eval set, and they shipped their next change without us.”

For Databricks:

“In June 2026 you launched a Forward Deployed Engineering organization that brings Professional Services under one roof, and said FDE isn’t a new practice at Databricks. Source 12Forward Deployed Engineering: Delivering Business Outcomes with AI (Jason Martin)PublisherDatabricks BlogSource typecompany blog I’ve spent years moving customers’ batch jobs onto Spark and owning them after go-live, so what changes for an engineer now that Professional Services and FDE sit under one roof?”

With no launch date, as at Palantir and Anthropic, use the team’s stage and the customer area the posting names. The Palantir, Databricks, OpenAI and Google guides collect what each has published. The company guides are free.

Take your first interview’s company and find its dated FDE decision: an announcement, a blog post or, failing both, its oldest live FDE posting. Spend an hour with its product or API and note one thing harder than the docs said. Write a short paragraph: the decision and date, what it says the job will be, what you found, and a decision of yours, with its cost, that fits one piece of the gap. Cut any market statistic and any line you could say to a competitor, then make it your answer to Why this company, and why now?. For your half, a career story, Pro’s illustrative answer to the career decisions question shows one that holds up when the interviewer asks why you are leaving now.
